what's next....

With Buckaroo done, I'm now off to Kolchak land to do a very big project with Moonstone. I'm very excited about it and cannot wait for you guy to see it and learn more about it. But alas all I can say is that I'm doing a Kolchak story for Moonstone Books and it is big... for you fans! However, I'll post up a sketch or two that I conjure up during the pre-pencilling stage for you guys to enjoy.

Oh have I mentioned how nice the Moonstone people are? Yes they are that great and nice.

BUCKAROO STORY IS DONE!!!!!!

Yes!!! I can now officially say that all pencilling and inking chores for the Buckaroo Banzai story are completely done. Andrew Elder, should be half way done with the colors by now so once I hear from my editor at Moonstone on when the ship date will be I'll let you guys here know as well.

Oh and to commemorate this fabulous occasion.......... anyone want a sketch?

Cool freelance tips/advice..

Found this site the other day and thought I'd share it with you guys.

It's called freelanceswitch.com and covers all sorts of items for the freelancing community. Great tips and advice. Spent some time reading what they had and it's pretty solid stuff. Read very good posts on marketing, negotiating and making the sale. It's sounds easier than what it is but it does give you some great pointers. Hell. I'll be using most of it during the phase in my professional life of being a web designer by day, comicbook artist at night!

Got asked to do a sketch for a big Buckaroo fan. I'll be doing roughs tonight and should have a final piece by Friday to deliver. Once it's done I'll post it on here for you guys to enjoy!

Anyone else want one?

Waiting...

So I finished all of the pencil work and low and behold...no nibs. I'm out of nibs, Used them all last time I inked. And I've been waiting for a week and a half for the specific nib I use to show up at any of the art stores here in Pr. And you know what?? Nothing. Had to go with the ever reliable dick blick art store online and ordered a batch. Now I have to wait 5 business days to get them.

Oh, I also decided to try out the Canson FanboyPaper comicbook art boards. I'll post more about once they arrive and I put them to the test. If there are anything like the 100lb. bristol paper then my work will be gold! Sorry Strathmore, but you bristol paper no longer cuts it in a humid tropical island.

What's coming next.....

Ok so I'm finishing up the last details for the new Buckaroo Banzai story for Moonstone Books (Prequel #3 for those paying attention) and now I'll be getting ready to start the BIG Kolchak project I have in line. If all works out I'll be able to get the Kolchak project out faster if I can get Moonstone to approve an inker (Austin Janowsky) to do those chores while I concentrate on pencilling, layout, color palettes, etc.. If all goes to plan then I think the book should be done and ready to color by early/mid winter. May be a bit longer since I have another smaller project the great people at Moonstone want me to do, which is fine by me. They've been great to me and I'm more than happy in returning the favor.

So for all yo Kolchak fans out there, you have some new stuff coming and for the Buckaroo fans, the new ok by yours truly should be out sometime in the fall. Once I get an actual print date I'll post it here as well.

In the meantime if anybody out there would like a free sketch of either Buckaroo or Kolchak, let me know!! Email me, leave a comment here or send me a message on facebook. Really I'm serious. I can manage to do a few sketches during the week so why not make them for you fans out there. Let me know you're out there!

As some of you may have noticed I've actually been able to post up some new images from the new Buckaroo Banzai prequel story for Moonstone Books. Maybe next week I may be able to post up some inks (cleaned up inks actually) then again I may just do some sketches in order to keep my drawing hand in check. Wizard World Chicago 2008: Thoughts II

Ok, one other issue that bugged me and it has always bothered me is cocky attitude artists. There I said it! I just cannot and I doubt I will ever, get over artists (and other people) that think there are god's gift to the earth, that their shit smells better than others, and/or think that because they got published, a record deal or anything of that nature that they are way above and beyond us commoners.

I believe in being humble, giving back what you have been granted/given, and being nice with EVERY ONE. Case in point, I strolled down artist alley with my wife looking at all of the booths. On only 3 occasions did we get a hi or hello. And you know what? At those 3 booths where they did say hi, we stopped talked with the artists and bought something from them. I'll talk about them in my next post. But do you see what I'm talking about? See what being nice can do? And to those 3 booths, they did well because they were nice to everyone. Hell I was very humbled with one since he was a big fan of Buckaroo Banzai that I drew him a 9x12 sketch especially for him. One good turn deserves another. I would done for the other two but honestly I didn't have the same amount of time to do the sketches. But I do have their contact info so eventually I'll send them theirs as a thank you and just out of professional interaction.

Not that it means that if you're not a pro I wouldn't do a sketch. Hell, email me with your info and I'll send you one too.

So, artist alley..... for some I can see its benefit but for others it looks like a waste of money. I did see the stereotypical table where the artist was buried in their sketchbook, completely blind to those passing by. Maybe it maturity, shyness or lack of a small percentage of business sense. Selling one's work isn't easy, hell I can do it up to a point but I'm not the marketing/self promo wizard. However, I do know my weaknesses and strengths and with that I know what I can and cannot do. I do want to learn more and perhaps even take a business class to be a better business person as I am an artist. I just felt that a lot of artists with booths at the con just needed that extra edge, and its as simple to learn as drawing simple shapes.

But of course I could be wrong.

Wizard World Chicago 2008 : Thoughts I

Well finally got back from Chicago after about a week of doing the con, seeing the city, sketching, finding inspiration and dealing with my day job.

For being my first time at a con as a professional I found it to be very cool and met some great people. I did finally get to meet the honchos of Moonstone Books in person and I found them all to be very nice people. I did take advantage to stock up on some books I couldn't get here. Thanks Lori!

The con itself was great. Like I said, I met some great people and saw a lot of stuff that I could not find here in Puerto Rico. Although at times the aisles between booths got very cramped, especially so on saturday. However asides that issue I enjoyed the convention very much.

Outside of the convention I did get to see Chicago, the city and its people. I tell, it never ceases to amaze me how people always try to sum you up by your dress, speech and behavior. For the most part, both my wife and I were clearly being 'eyed' upon by mexicans, whites, african americans and indians. We could clearly sense them scanning us and them trying to label us. It's was amazing that people would voluntarily want to auto-segregate, and label another. Now I've had my share of racial discrimination and even got a humbled hate call the day after september 11th, so having those experiences and now having these added to my latter experiences I find it very saddening that this still occurred. I've read up on american history and I don't know. My only response to this right now is that famous phrase "history will repeat itself to those who forget it." And that what I feel is going on all across the board. A lot of subtle discrimination and auto-segregation, yet no one will admit and even less talk about it.

I guess I missed that camaraderie and true expression of enjoying another's company that I got at the con. Oh well...
